Sumatran tiger cub makes first zoo appearance

A rare Sumatran tiger cub barely three weeks old and weighing about 9-pounds made his first public appearance Thursday at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma. Only 300 are estimated to remain in the wild with an additional 75 in North American zoo, one of the most endangered animals on the planet. He was born on August 22 and the zoo will have an on-line naming contest. Twice a day the public can see keeper interaction with him at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. This area has stuffed playmates he may or may not recognize as tigers. Senior biologist Andy Goldfarb provides an arm for the cub to rest on during a feeding and weighing session. For more information see pdza.org
