Destruction Island

The tight cove on Destruction Island where boats have to tie up with four lines in the center to avoid contact with rocks when moored overnight. The open bowed boat in this photo is the property of WDFW. Peter Hodum, with the University of Puget Sound and Scott Pearson, with WDFW, are bird researchers that are studying the Rinoceros Aucklet on Destruction Island--17 miles from LaPush, are on the decline along with tufted puffins, which are endangered. The most likely cause is invasive European rabbits brought over by lighthouse owners decades ago. We look at how fragile and important these remote and isolated ecosystems are.
