Shibani Patnaik of Philadelphia performs a traditional Odissi dance at the Rainier Valley Cultural Arts Center Sunday April 29, 2012. Odissi is a traditional form of dance from Orissa, in Eastern India. Patnaik is on a 14-show tour across the U.S. with four musicians from Orissa for the next several weeks. The Oriyas of Greater Seattle, a cultural group from Orissa, brought them here to perform their piece, 'Samsara, The Cycle of Life', a music and dance performance at the cultural center Sunday. "My goal is to make it [classical art] a little bit more meaningful and relevant, especially to the second generation," said Patnaik, who was born and raised in the U.S. but studied extensively in India. The word Samsara signifies the soul's journey through life - birth, death, and reincarnation.
