A riot breaks out in downtown Vancouver, B.C., after the Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins in hockey's Stanley Cup Final June 15. "I was in Vancouver when the Canucks were last in the Stanley Cup, and the city rioted then, too. But some years had passed, and Vancouver had survived the Olympic Games without incident. But as the afternoon wore on that June, it became apparent that too many people were downtown, packed too tightly. I was kicked and punched as I tracked the fast-moving crowd, watching in horror as hooligans set fire to storefronts and destroyed windows. It was obvious that this had become an event when I saw a pizza shop selling slices to some of the same people who were wilding in the street." -- Dean Rutz
