The Seattle Times 2011 Photos of the Year

A sobbing Amanda Knox acknowledges her surreal transition from convicted killer to free woman at a news conference moments after landing Oct. 4 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The 24-year-old begins a new life back in her hometown after spending four years in an Italian prison, accused and then convicted of murdering her roommate. An Italian court overturned the convictions of Knox and her Italian co-defendant Oct. 3. "I pulled out the most important piece of photography equipment I own: a ladder. When Knox walked out and turned right at me, I had probably the best I could hope for: a woman trying to smile, but collapsing into tears. Or was it the other way around? Guilt or innocence aside, she remained overwhelmed by it all. And who could blame her? The media crowd was at least 20 yards wide. It's incredible, and more than a bit troubling, how the very young can take a news story to uncharted heights of coverage." -- Ken Lambert
