The boreal forest is dug up when old sands are mined north of Ft. McMurray in Alberta. This is the Albian Sands facility, an open pit mine, shown in the foreground. Limestone is also mined from the oil sands pit and then piled in giant mountains in the forest near the oil sands mine. Company buses shuttle workers from Fort McMurray to the mine. Major Oil sands development in Fort McMurray, Alberta, by major oil companies produce hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil daily, helping feed US oil needs.
