Ullambana ceremony

The monastery's Abbess, The Celebrant Master Jian Pin Shifu, stands before the altar before the sutra during the Ullambana Ceremony at the Buddha Jewel Monastery on Rainier Ave S in Seattle on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013. Ullambana, a Sanskrit word meaning "hanging upside down," is a time to practice compassion towards those who are suffering, or "upside down," and to honor those who have departed. The main sutra consists of a discourse from Buddha to his disciple Maudgalyayana on how to obtain liberation for his mother.
