Hill’s Pet Nutrition is recalling 62 bags of Science Diet Adult Small and Toy Breed dry dog food because they could be contaminated with salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The 15.5-pound bags were part of a single production run distributed to 17 veterinary clinic and pet-store customers between April 24 and May 13 in California, Hawaii and Nevada, the FDA says. The Stock-Keeping Unit (SKU) code is 9097; the best before date is 08 2015. The Production code is M094.

(The SKU number is located on the bottom of the bag, both side panels and on the back lower right hand corner below the UPC code. The “Best before” date and production code is stamped on the top, middle of each bag.)

All 17 affected customers have been contacted by Hill’s, which is based in Topeka, Kan., and there have been no reported illnesses related to this product to date.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products, the FDA says.
