Postscripts: Kickstarter launches Seattle jewelry maker

When the crowd says yes, business takes off.

When Seattle sculptor Catherine Grisez took to the Internet last year to raise money to grow her nascent jewelry business, she had no idea how things would pan out.

Seventeen months later, her business is going strong: Catherine Grisez Jewelry is now sold in more than 30 shops around the country. And Grisez, who raised money to attend a trade show in New York to help launch her business, is now investing in a website to sell to retail and wholesale customers ().

“Things are going well,’’ says Grisez, whose fundraising campaign was included in an April 7 story about artists and entrepreneurs who are turning to “crowd funding” sites such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo to give life to their ideas.

Seattleites launched hundreds of artistic and commercial projects through the Internet this year. Among the successful campaigns: a public-access space telescope that raised $1.5 million, a distillery to make “100 percent local bourbon,” an easy-to-clean pillow, and a microscopic lens for cellphones.

Grisez, meanwhile, is continuing to teach, exhibit her work and make new metal sculptures at her South Park studio.
