Postscripts: Tukwila raid aimed to take back its boulevard
A clean sweep for a troubled stretch of town.
After years of battling crime at several hotels on Tukwila International Boulevard, the city of Tukwila orchestrated a raid in August that shuttered the problem properties and opened up new possibilities for redeveloping a troubled stretch of the boulevard.
“We are taking back our boulevard,’’ Tukwila Mayor Jim Haggerton said. The raid closed three motels located within two blocks of one another. Collectively, they accounted for one in six calls for service to the Police Department for crimes such as rape, assault, drug dealing, prostitution and at least three overdose deaths in recent years, according to court documents.
Businesses and developers who want to be part of redeveloping the area have been approaching the city, Haggerton said.
“The city received many phone calls from business owners, residents and visitors to the Tukwila International Boulevard area stating the positive impact they’ve witnessed or experienced since” August. Meanwhile, the properties remain boarded up and fenced, with posted warnings from the U.S. marshal to stay out.
