IT'S SO PERFECTLY Southern California, surfing with a dog. And Hanzo, a boxer, is a real sports-dog; he skateboards as well as surfs.

The sturdy Hanzo surfs competitively, too, catching the waves with 47 other canines at the annual Surf City Surf Dog contest in Huntington Beach last year. It's a fun charity fundraiser with a serious edge; dogs even can get one-on-one surfing lessons leading up to the annual contest.

The pooches compete based on their weight class; they're judged on the length of ride, wave size and if they stand on the surfboard on all four paws. And, yes, they all wear doggy life jackets.

Who was the winner? None other than Hanzo, both in the extra-large category and as the crowd-pleaser. And there was a crowd. More than 2,500 people came to the Surf Dog weekend for a canine costume show, pet expo and, most of all, to see the "surFurs" ride the waves.
