Framed by a ferry
Seattle Times reader James Whelan's moody photo of the nighttime Seattle skyline as seen from a ferry heading to Bainbridge Island.
Photographer: James Whelan, Kirkland
Photo taken: Oct. 19, aboard Bainbridge Island ferry
Photographer's description: "My family and I were heading out to Bainbridge Island and I happened to bring my Nikon D700 with me along with my tripod so I tried a long exposure of the ferry leaving Seattle."
Expert says: "Slowing the shutter speed just enough to show some motion without blurring the people or the skyline, as well as not overexposing, shows great execution. I love the symmetry and the 'poppy' colors. A great photo that represents our city extremely well and shows its beauty."
