The 28th Annual Emerald City Open Water Swim — the granddaddy of such local events — will churn early Saturday morning in Andrews Bay at Seward Park.

The event will feature a half-mile straight course and a one-mile triangle course.

Check-in stations open at 7:30 a.m. The half-mile event will begin at 9 a.m. The one-mile event begins when the first event finishes.

Swimmers 17 and younger must have parental approval to participate. Minimum age is 10 years. Registration costs from $40 to $55, depending on age and events.

Refreshments, including hot drinks, will be available for swimmers.

The Seattle Parks and Recreation Department credits Dave Gertsch, who swam in such events in California, with organizing the first Emerald City Open Water Swim in 1984. About 100 swimmers participated then.
