California invader City by the Bay wins Seattle Handicap

California shipper City by the Bay remained undefeated Sunday with a three-quarter-length victory over a stubborn Chu and You in the $50,000 Seattle Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs.

AUBURN — California shipper City by the Bay remained undefeated Sunday with a three-quarter-length victory over a stubborn Chu and You in the $50,000 Seattle Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs.

City by the Bay was in fourth place early, then jockey Juan Hernandez moved her three-wide to take command in the stretch, and she gradually edged away from Chu and You for her third career win.

City by the Bay ran 6½ furlongs in 1 minute, 14.76 seconds and paid $3.60 to win. It was her first start since an 8¾-length victory in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante in September at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif.

Chu and You, last year’s champion 2-year-old filly at Emerald Downs, rebounded from a sub-par effort last month in Canada and gave the winner a stern challenge through the stretch after leading most of the way.

“I thought (City by the Bay) could win this race, but I didn’t think it would be easy,” said Hernandez, the second leading rider at Golden Gate in Northern California. “I asked her a little before the quarter-pole because I didn’t want (Chu and You) to try and get away from us. ... . I was worried that we might finish second because the filly on the inside (Chu and You) looked like she was never going to give up.”

Emerald Racing Club has first race

Dancing Yodeler, owned by the 128 members of the Emerald Racing Club who paid $500 each to be part owners for the summer, finished third in the eighth race as the 5-2 favorite.

It was the was first the 6-year-old gelding had competed for its new owners. The Emerald Racing Club also owns Anelina, a 5-year-old mare, who was claimed for the group for $6,250 out of her last race, at Golden Gate.

Dancing Yodeler was rewarded with a big ovation as he was unsaddled, with many of the 128 Emerald Racing Club members taking pictures from the rail.

Note

Trackattacker ($7.60) set a track record of 49.98 seconds for 4½ furlongs while winning by 9 lengths in a $17,850 maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds.
