In a field full of proven stakes horses, Scat Daddybaby showed Sunday he might become one.

In one of the better allowance fields in years at Emerald Downs, the 4-year-old gelding went straight to the lead in the $21,000 race and was never really threatened during his 2¼-length win in the 6-furlong race.

With Gallyn Mitchell aboard, the final time was 1 minute, 8.20 seconds.

Scat Daddybaby paid $19.40 to win.

“(Today’s race) was about as good as you could have hoped,” said Scat Daddybaby owner and breeder Mike Feuerborn, who said the goal for the horse is the $200,000 Longacres Mile in August. “But it’s just one step.”

Less than a year ago, Scat Daddybaby was losing claiming races. But after moving into the barn of Robert Baze, he started winning. He won his last three races last year and has won four straight.

Mr. Bowling, a Grade III stakes winner, was the 5-2 favorite in the field of 10 and was second, 2 lengths ahead of Finallygotabentley. He was one of three in the field who ran in last summer’s Longacres Mile.

Winning Machine, one of the best stakes horses at Emerald Downs for years, broke slowly and rallied to finish fifth. Jebrica, who was fourth in last year’s Longacres Mile, was also fourth Sunday.
