Rewind: Live chat with Alex Thomson

British skipper Alex Thomson has been sailing for more than 20 years and currently competes in the high-speed, extreme IMOCA 60 class. He has been sponsored by HUGO BOSS since 2003, which is one of the longest sponsorships in sailing history.

Earlier this year in January, he took third place in the Vendee Globe, a 24,000 mile, solo, unassisted, non-stop round-the-world yacht race, finishing in 80 days,19 hours, 23 minutes and 43 seconds. It was the third time he had sailed in the Vendee Globe and first time he had completed the arduous race. He also became the fastest Brit to sail solo around the world in a monohull boat.

In 1999 at age 25, he became the youngest skipper to win a round-the-world race, when he won the Clipper Round the World Race, a record he still holds.

Thomson answered questions about his sailing career, competing in the grueling Vendee Globe race and much more July 19 on seattletimes.com.
