LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Trainer Doug O'Neill came up far short in his bid to win the Kentucky Derby in consecutive years.

O'Neill, who saddled 2012 winner I'll Have Another, sent out 7-1 shot Goldencents on Saturday. The Santa Anita Derby winner was 17th in a field of 19 in the Kentucky Derby, 49 ½ lengths behind winner Orb.

Goldencents' jockey, Kevin Krigger, was seeking to become the first African-American rider to win the Derby since 1902.

"It just wasn't our race," said Krigger, who was the leading rider at Emerald Downs in Auburn in 2005.

Enjoying the ride

Hall of Famer Gary Stevens, the leading rider at Longacres in Renton in 1983 and 1984, is four months into a comeback after being retired for seven years.

Three-time Derby winner Stevens was aboard 24-1 shot Oxbow, who finished sixth.

"I've got a smile on my face I can't wipe off. It was fun. It was fun, because he ran his race," Stevens, 50, said. "He got a chance today, and he fired a big bullet, and that's when it's fun, when you get a good trip in this race and the horse is giving his all."

Record effort

Rosie Napravnik guided 15-1 shot Mylute to a fifth-place finish, the best of all time for a female rider in the Derby.

Napravnik surpassed a record she set two years ago, when Pants on Fire was ninth.

"It was really exciting," the 25-year-old said. "I was excited to have the best finish by a female."
