Virginia Beach reveals plan

Economic-development officials in Virginia Beach revealed a plan Tuesday to build a $350 million arena and attract an NBA or NHL team to Virginia's largest city, The Associated Press reported.

Virginia Beach officials said an 18,500-seat arena could be ready to house an NBA or NHL team by 2015.

There has been speculation the city has targeted the NBA Sacramento Kings, but a Sacramento Bee report noted officials "didn't mention any potential sports teams as tenants." The arena proposal is for a public-private partnership involving Virginia Beach and investors Comcast-Spectacor and Live Nation.

Asked whether his company has had discussions with Kings officials, Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko said, "We have not had any talks."

Other cities that have been mentioned in speculation about Kings relocation include Seattle; Anaheim, Calif.; San Jose, Calif.; Kansas City, Mo.; Louisville, Ky.; Tampa, Fla.; and Las Vegas.

Weiss to join Hawks' staff

Former Hawks coach Bob Weiss is returning to Atlanta as an assistant coach and consultant on coach Larry Drew's staff. Weiss, 70, has coached four NBA teams, including the Sonics.

Penn St. group is unhappy

A group of 29 past chairs of the Penn State faculty senate blasted the NCAA and former FBI director Louis Freeh over their handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal, saying Freeh's report — prepared for the university — and the NCAA's $60 million in fines unfairly punish the entire university community.

• Madison police arrested three 21-year-olds from Madison allegedly involved in the Aug. 1 assault on Wisconsin senior tailback Montee Ball.

Wendell J. Venerable, Deonte J. Wilson and Robert A. Wilks were taken into custody.

• Roneeka Hodges scored 20 points as the Tulsa Shock beat the host Atlanta Dream 84-80.

The Dream played without WNBA scoring leader Angel McCoughtry, who was suspended indefinitely for allegedly violating team rules.

In other WNBA games, league-leading Minnesota beat visiting San Antonio 96-84 in overtime; Connecticut won 83-72 at Chicago, and host Indiana defeated Washington 83-68.

• The NHL issued a new proposal to the players' association as a lockout looms next month. The sides will meet again Wednesday in New York.

• German cyclist John Degenkolb of the Argos-Shimano team won the 10th stage of the Spanish Vuelta, and Spaniard Joaquin Rodriguez of the Katusha team leads the 21-stage event.

• Art Heyman, an ex-Duke standout who played six seasons of pro basketball in the NBA or American Basketball Association, died Monday at 71.
