Chris Williams of the University of Washington won two close matches Saturday to capture the 110th Western Amateur Championship.
HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. — Golfer Chris Williams of the University of Washington won two close matches Saturday to capture the 110th Western Amateur Championship.
Williams, the medalist in stroke-play qualifying, came from behind to beat Jordan Russell 1-up in the final at Exmoor Country Club.
Williams took the lead when his opponent bogeyed No. 14.
In the morning semifinals, Williams needed 19 holes to beat Abraham Ancer of the University of Oklahoma.
Williams' title propelled him to No. 1 in the Scratch Players World Amateur Rankings.
Tennis
Former Husky Denise Dy will play for the women's open singles championship on Sunday in the Washington State Open at the Seattle Tennis Club.
The top-seeded Dy, from Seattle, rallied to defeat Lauren Jones of Chandler, Ariz., 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals. Third-seeded Giuliana Olmos of Fremont, Calif., beat No. 2 seed Suzanne Matzenauer of Tacoma 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
In the men's open singles semifinals, eighth-seeded Brian Battistone of Las Vegas, Nev., beat unseeded Emmett Egger of Issaquah 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, and No. 2 Rudolf Siwy of Fresno, Calif., beat No. 3 Brian Wilson of Redmond, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Baseball
The Seattle Studs fell to 2-1 in the double-elimination National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan., with a 1-0 loss to El Dorado, Kan.
