Johnson wins NASCAR

Sprint Cup event at Indy

Jimmie Johnson won the Brickyard 400 for the fourth time Sunday, turning in a dominant drive at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

With the victory in the Sprint Cup Series event, Johnson joined Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon as the only NASCAR drivers to win four times at the historic 2.5-mile track, which has hosted stock-car racing since 1994.

"Four wins? I'm at a loss for words," Johnson said in victory lane.

Kyle Busch finished second. Greg Biffle of Vancouver, Wash., placed third and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fourth.

Earnhardt leads the Cup standings for the first time since October 2004. He has a 14-point advantage on previous leader Matt Kenseth, who wrecked out in 35th place. Biffle is third in the standings, 22 points behind Earnhardt.

"We've persevered all year, and we've done good work all year," Earnhardt said. "I think it is a bit of a confidence booster, something I'm proud of because we've worked hard all year and we've got something to show for it."

Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw finished 12th.

Hamilton earns F1 victory

Lewis Hamilton of Britain won the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix, prolonging McLaren's dominance on the winding Hungaroring circuit in Budapest.

It was the McLaren team's sixth victory in the Hungarian GP in eight years.

Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen of Finland was second and teammate Romain Grosjean of France was third.

"Really fantastic," Hamilton said over the team radio after crossing the finish line. "Let's try to keep this up."

Series leader Fernando Alonso of the Ferrari team finished fifth.

Rams' Long gets extension

The St. Louis Rams and defensive end Chris Long, 27, agreed on a four-year contract extension through the 2016 season before the first practice of training camp.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the deal is believed to exceed $40 million and the guaranteed money could be at least $20 million.

Long had 13 sacks last season; his sack total has increased each year.

Texans' Johnson is injured

Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson said he will miss "a week or so" after a minor groin injury; the five-time Pro Bowl selection fell while running a route in practice.

Arkansas St. dismisses Dyer

Ex-Auburn running back Michael Dyer has been dismissed from the Arkansas State program for violating team rules.

Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn said, "I am truly disappointed that it didn't work out here at ASU for Mike. I wish Mike nothing but the best in the future."

Dyer transferred to Arkansas State in January after he was suspended indefinitely by Auburn coach Gene Chizik for violating unspecified team rules before the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Dyer, 21, was the first Auburn tailback to rush for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons; he was voted the offensive most valuable player as a freshman in Auburn's 22-19 victory over Oregon in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game.

Prospects say they plan

to attend Penn State

Several of the top prospects who have given oral commitments to Penn State have told the team's coaches they will stick with the program despite sanctions handed down by the NCAA last week.

Offensive linemen Brendan Mahon and Andrew Nelson, wide receiver Will Fuller, defensive end Garrett Sickels and two of coach Bill O'Brien's most anticipated commitments — tight end Adam Breneman and quarterback Christian Hackenberg — visited State College and met with Penn State coaches.

"I didn't think it was so much giving us a pitch to re-recruit us, because we were all committed," Hackenberg said.

Elsewhere

• Paynter pulled away to beat Nonios by 3 ¾ lengths in the $1 million Haskell Invitational for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

Paynter, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Rafael Bejarano, ran 1-1/8 miles in 1 minute, 48.87 seconds. The colt paid $4 to win in the Grade I race.

Baffert trained the last three Haskell winners, giving him six victories in the race.

• American Sam Querrey won the Farmers Classic tennis tournament in Los Angeles for the third time in four years, routing Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania 6-0, 6-2 in the final.

Querrey also took the title in 2009 and 2010; he missed last year's event because of an elbow injury.

• Jack McInerney scored in the 90th minute to give the host Philadelphia Union a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution in a Major League Soccer match.
