Roddick wins his 32nd title

Winning tournaments never gets old for Andy Roddick.

The 29-year-old American beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to win the Atlanta Open and earn his 32nd ATP World Tour title Sunday.

"I've won 32 times and in every one of them I've never assumed I was going to win again," Roddick said.

The only active male players with more career victories are 30-year-old Roger Federer (75) of Switzerland and 26-year-old Rafael Nadal (50) of Spain.

Cibulkova defeats Bartoli

Second-seeded Dominique Cibulkova of Slovakia used her powerful groundstrokes to defeat No. 1 seed Marion Bartoli of France 6-1, 7-5 in the Mercury Insurance Open final in Carlsbad, Calif. Cibulkova won her second WTA Tour title.

Berry is arrested again

Detroit Lions cornerback Aaron Berry has been arrested in Pennsylvania for the second time this offseason.

Cpl. Kyle Gautsch of the Harrisburg Police Department said Berry, 24, was taken into custody early Saturday morning on three charges of simple assault. Gautsch said there "was a weapon allegedly brandished during the incident."

Berry, who is from Harrisburg, was also arrested in that area June 23 on suspicion of DUI, failure to stop and render aid from an accident and other counts. He was set to enter a diversionary program as a result of that case.

Patterson to miss camp

The Philadelphia Eagles have ruled out defensive tackle Mike Patterson, 28, for training camp and possibly longer because an incision where he had brain surgery in January hasn't fully healed.

Patterson was diagnosed with a brain malformation in August after suffering a seizure during a training-camp practice at Lehigh University.

Broncos contact victims

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning called hospital victims of the Colorado theater shooting in an attempt to lift their spirits.

A spokeswoman for the Medical Center of Aurora said Manning spoke one-on-one by phone with several patients.

Six other Broncos — Joe Mays, Ryan Clady, Chris Kuper, Ben Garland, Eric Decker and Jacob Tamme — visited with five patients at the hospital and also met with the emergency-room staff that provided initial treatment for many of the victims.

Fifty-eight people were wounded after a gunman clad in riot gear opened fire in a crowded theater early Friday where "The Dark Knight Rises" was being shown. Twelve people have died in the massacre.

College football

Former coach Carlen dies

Jim Carlen, who had winning records coaching at South Carolina, Texas Tech and West Virginia, died in Columbia, S.C. He was 79.

Carlen was 107-69-6 in 16 college seasons. He coached South Carolina — where he also served as athletic director — from 1975 to 1981 and had a 45-36-1 record. Earlier, Carlen was 25-13-3 at West Virginia and 37-20-2 at Texas Tech.

Whitecaps beat San Jose

Barry Robson scored on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute to help the host Vancouver Whitecaps beat league-leading San Jose 2-1 in a Major League Soccer match.

Dane Richards scored in the 20th minute for the Whitecaps (9-6-7), who snapped a tie with Sounders FC and took sole possession of third place in the Western Conference.

Alan Gordon scored for the Earthquakes (13-5-4) in the 38th minute.

• Lucas Piazon scored in the 82nd minute to give Chelsea of London a 1-1 draw in an exhibition match against Paris Saint-Germain before 38,202 in the first soccer match at new Yankee Stadium — which opened in 2009 — in New York.

Chelsea captain John Terry, who is white, got a standing ovation in his first match since acquittal on a charge he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand, who is black, during an English Premier League match in October.

On Wednesday, Chelsea beat the host Sounders 4-2 before 53,309 at CenturyLink Field.

• In NBA Summer League games in Las Vegas, former Gonzaga standout Adam Morrison scored a game-high 26 points to help the Los Angeles Clippers beat Boston 92-77 and ex-Washington Huskies guard Tony Wroten Jr. scored a team-high 17 points for the Memphis Grizzlies in a 97-91 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
