DETROIT — Dave Villwock drove the Spirit of Qatar 96 to the top of the qualifying ladder Friday at the Detroit Yacht Club APBA Gold Cup.
The defending Gold Cup champion posted a two-lap average of 162.904 mph on the 2.5-mile Detroit River course.
Steve David qualified second in the Oh Boy! Oberto at 161.789, followed by rookie Jimmy Shane in the Graham Trucking at 157.184.
Golf
Carl Jonson of Bainbridge Island will face Shotaro Ban of San Jose, Calif., in Saturday's final match of the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship, played at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.
Jonson defeated Blake Snyder of Seattle, 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals, and Nick Chianello of Gresham, Ore., 1 up in the afternoon's semifinals. Ban defeated Jarred Bossio of Olympia, 4 and 3 in the quarters, and Rak Cho of Eugene, 2 and 1 in the semis.
• Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club and David Phay of Whidbey Golf and Country Club each shot 9-under-par 62 to share the lead entering the final round of the Rosauers Open Invitational in Spokane.
