Mexican heavyweight Andy Ruiz Jr. dispatched Tacoma's Jonte Willis with an eighth-round TKO in an HBO undercard bout on Saturday night in Carson, Calif.

Ruiz Jr. (15-0, 9 KOs) knocked down Willis (8-4, 2 KOs) in the sixth round.

"Jonte fought a great match against tonight against a tough foe," said his manager, Bill McDonald of Everett. "Jonte's eye swelled up early in Round 1. He fought the remaining rounds like a champion."

Ruiz Jr. was 105-5 as an amateur in Mexico.

In the 12-round main event, Filipino Nonita Dontaire outclassed South African Jeffrey Mathebulas to win the WBO/IBF super-bantamweight unification title unanimously.
