Sandusky doesn't testify

as the defense rests

The defense in Jerry Sandusky's child sex-abuse trial rested Wednesday in Bellefonte, Pa., without calling the former Penn State assistant coach to dispute charges that he molested boys at his home and on campus over more than a decade.

Closing arguments were set for Thursday in the case that led to the dismissal of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno, the ouster of the university president and a re-examination of college administrators' role in reporting abuse charges.

The defense called only four new witnesses, including a physician who they used to try to poke holes in the story of a Penn State coaching assistant who testified he saw Sandusky sexually assault a boy in the campus showers more than a decade ago.

The defense's case has consisted of character witnesses who defended Sandusky's reputation, a psychologist who said Sandusky had a personality disorder and the ex-coach's wife, who said she did not see her husband do anything inappropriate with the accusers. His lawyers showed that an investigator had shared information with an accuser about other alleged victims' stories and repeatedly suggested that accusers have financial motivations for their claims.

UConn officially banned

Ten NCAA Division I men's teams, including 2011 national champion Connecticut, will be ineligible for the postseason next year because they failed to maintain sufficient graduation rates, the NCAA announced when it released Academic Progress Report (APR) scores for each school.

Donovan lifts Galaxy

Landon Donovan scored a goal in each half to fuel a rally from a two-goal deficit and lift the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 3-2 victory over host Real Salt Lake.

Mike Magee also scored for the Galaxy (5-8-2), which had three unanswered goals to knock off the Western Conference leaders.

Kyle Beckerman and Alvaro Saborio each scored first-half goals for RSL (10-4-2), which saw its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped in stunning fashion. It was the first time in franchise history Salt Lake lost an MLS game after building a two-goal lead.

In other MLS games, Will Bruin scored twice in the second half as the host Houston Dynamo came back from a two-goal deficit in the final 17 minutes to tie Toronto FC 3-3; and Chris Wondolowski scored on a penalty kick in stoppage time after an own goal had tied the game in the 83rd minute as the San Jose Earthquakes defeated the host Colorado Rapids 2-1.

Pittsburgh's Malkin MVP

Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player.

New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist won the Vezina Trophy, Ottawa's Erik Karlsson won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman and Colorado's Gabriel Landeskog won the Calder Trophy as the top rookie. St. Louis' Ken Hitchcock won the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL's top coach for the first time in his lengthy career.

Harvin requests trade

Percy Harvin was nowhere to be found at the Minnesota Vikings' mandatory minicamp practice. Unhappy with several issues with the team that drafted him in the first round in 2009, Harvin requested a trade.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman said the organization considers Harvin a cornerstone player and will work to resolve any issues that have upset him. "We have no interest at all in trading Percy Harvin," Spielman said.

Venus unseeded

Five-time champion Venus Williams and four-time Grand Slam winner Kim Clijsters are unseeded at Wimbledon for the first time in more than a decade.

The seedings were announced for the Grand Slam tournament that starts Monday, with top-ranked defending champion Novak Djokovic heading the men's list and Maria Sharapova leading the women's — both for the first time.

Mercury upends Mystics

Sammy Prahalis scored seven of her 15 points in the final 2:02 and made a tiebreaking layup with 23 seconds left as the host Phoenix Mercury got past the Washington Mystics 80-77.
