Tom Brandes of Bellevue shot a 1-under-par 70 — tied for the best round of the day — on Friday to capture the Pacific Northwest Senior Men's Amateur Championship held at Rope Rider and Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum.

Brandes, who entered the final round three shots out of the lead, finished with a three-round total of 222, two shots ahead of runner-up Kent Brown of Colville.

In the Super Senior Championship, Gaylord Davis of Portland shot a final-round 77 and finished eight shots ahead of Seattle's Bruce Richards for the title.

Track and field

Washington State javelin throwers Christine Kirkwood and Anna Adamko finished fourth and eighth, respectively, at the USA Junior outdoor championships in Bloomington, Ind. Kirkwood, a freshman from Othello, posted a throw of 150 feet, 4 inches, while Adamko, a freshman from Vancouver, Wash., had a toss of 142-3.

• Gonzaga first baseman/pitcher Marco Gonzales joined Stanford's Stephen Piscotty and Florida's Brian Johnson as finalists for The College Baseball Hall of Fame's John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

Gonzales, a native of Fort Collins, Colo., went 8-2 with a 1.55 earned-run average in 12 starts on the mound and hit .325 with 29 RBI, 10 doubles, two homers and an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .802.

The winner will be announced June 30.

• Erin Little (Colville High School), Ashtyn Mann (Woodinville HS) and Lindsey Milner (Meadowdale HS) will join the Central Washington volleyball team this fall.

• Patrick Waer has joined the Washington State baseball staff as an assistant coach. Waer spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Fresno State, which won the 2008 national title and played in five NCAA regionals during his tenure.

• Everett Silvertips defenseman Ryan Murray was named to the Canadian roster for August's Canada-Russia Challenge, which pits the countries' national junior programs in four games — Aug. 9 and 10 in Russia, and Aug. 13 and 14 in Canada — to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series.

• Hugh Miller of Mercer Island fell to Mike Edwards of Tulsa, Okla., 701-691, in the title match of the U.S. Bowling Congress Senior Masters in Las Vegas.

• The Olympia Rise will begin its inaugural American Basketball Association season in November. The Rise joins the Olympia Reign of the International Basketball League as the two semiprofessional men's basketball teams in Olympia.
