DES MOINES, Iowa — Washington freshman J.J. Juilfs finished 13th in the men's pole vault Friday at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships.
Juilfs came in on a good run, having won the Pac-12 conference title then following it up with a perfect series at West Prelims in Austin. He cleared the opening height of 16 feet, 4 ¾ inches on one attempt, then needed three to pass 16-10 ¾.
Moving up to 17-4 ½, Juilfs vaulted over that bar on his first try, moving up to seventh overall as the field dwindled to 16 competitors. But Juilfs was unable to clear the next height, 17-8 ½. His second and third attempts saw him get well over the bar but hit it with his chest on the way down to dislodge it.
