BELLEVUE — Washington left fielder Joe Meggs hit a first-inning home run and then later broke a 4-4 tie with an eighth-inning single as the Husky baseball team beat Seattle University 5-4 at rainy Bannerwood Park on Tuesday night.

The game started about 45 minutes late and included a 59-minute rain delay in the second inning. It was the final nonconference game for the Huskies, who will host Washington State this Friday through Sunday.

The Huskies (28-24) led 4-0 before the Redhawks (22-28) came back to tie with a four-run sixth inning.

Men's basketball

Washington State has hired former Fresno State coach Ray Lopes as an assistant men's basketball coach. Lopes spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Idaho. Lopes was an assistant under Kelvin Sampson at Washington State in 1993-94 and went with Sampson to Oklahoma.

Crew

Former Washington Huskies Giuseppe Lanzone and Brett Newlin were part of the United States' men's eight crew that qualified for the London Olympics. Despite missing out on initial qualifications at last summer's World Championships, the USA eight took advantage of a last-chance window with a win at the Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Lanzone of McLean, Va. and Newlin of Riverton, Wyo., helped power the Americans over New Zealand by four seconds to cap a wire-to-wire victory. Lanzone and Newlin were on the four-man boat in the Beijing Games that placed ninth.

Other baseball

Washington State's Collin Slaybaugh drove in the only run in the 10th inning as the host Cougars earned a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga.
