Less than two days after Eastern Washington ended its men's basketball season with a 79-70 loss to Weber State in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament, Eagles head coach Kirk Earlywine was informed that his contract would not be renewed.
Earlywine learned of his dismissal during a Monday morning meeting with EWU's athletic director Bill Chaves, who, when questioned about the motive of the move, expressed a desire to "make better progress — certainly within the conference — in the future ... and, hopefully, this affords us that opportunity."
Among some names to surface as potential candidates to replace Earlywine are Whitworth coach Jim Hayford; Washington State assistant Jeff Hironaka; Seattle Pacific coach Ryan Looney; and Gonzaga assistant Ray Giacoletti, who was EWU coach from 2000 to 2004.
Track and field
The full field for the 2011 NCAA indoor championships was announced, and seven Washington names were on the list. The championships are Friday and Saturday in College Station, Texas.
Representing the Huskies will be Ryan Vu (men's pole vault), Scott Roth (men's pole vault), James Cameron (men's mile), Colton Tully-Doyle (men's 3,000 meters), Jeremy Taiwo (heptathlon), Katie Flood (women's 3,000) and Megan Goethals (women's 3,000).
Washington State will send six athletes: Joe Abbott (men's 800), Holly Parent (women's high jump) and the men's 1,600 relay squad of Greg Hornsby, Brandon Dawson, Jacob Sealby and Jeshua Anderson.
Baseball
Dallas Baptist scored eight runs in the first inning and beat Washington State (5-4) 13-4 in a nonconference game in Pullman. All eight runs were charged to freshman starter Taylor Williams (0-1), who did not record an out in his first collegiate start.
Golf
The Seattle University women posted back-to-back scores of 328 to finish the first day of the Fresno State Lexus Classic in 14th place. Christine Cook and Shannon Quinn led the Redhawks in the individual standings, tied for 38th at 16-over 160.
• Washington State's Kent Hagen shot rounds of 71-72 to stand tied for fourth at 3-over 173 after two rounds of the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.
