Sports Stars of the Year announced

Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez, Huskies quarterback Jake Locker and the Washington women's softball team took top honors at the 75th annual Sports Stars of the Year ceremonies.

Felix Hernandez, Jake Locker and the Washington women's softball team took top honors at the 75th annual Sports Stars of the Year ceremonies at Benaroya Hall Tuesday night.

Hernandez, the Mariners' ace pitcher, was voted 2009's top pro star. Locker, the Huskies quarterback, was the male star and the UW softball team shared the female award.

The softball team also won play of the year, and the victory in Russia by the 1958 UW men's varsity eight crew was voted top sports story of the past 75 years.

Winners were chosen in online voting, with more than 30,000 votes cast. The event was hosted by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper until this year, when the Seattle Sports Commission took over.

Blackburn to be memorialized

Fans and friends can pay tribute to the late Bob Blackburn, the legendary, original broadcast voice of the Sonics, at two public events this weekend. Blackburn, 85, died Jan. 8 of pneumonia.

A wake is scheduled at the Gaslamp Bar & Grill in Issaquah, beginning at about 7 p.m. Friday. Video of the 1979 NBA championship series-clinching victory by the Sonics and Blackburn's audio call of the game will be replayed, along with other vintage calls by "The Voice."

Sunday, a public memorial service will be at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Bellevue, 1934 108th Ave. NE. Overflow parking is available across the street at the LDS Church, with shuttles available to bring guests to the memorial service.

A private family service is also scheduled Saturday.

Note

• The Tacoma Rainiers will open their Pacific Coast League baseball season at home on April 8 against Colorado Springs. This will be the final year of baseball at 50-year-old Cheney Stadium before it is fully renovated for the 2011 season.
