Calgary hopes to sign Bouwmeester before he becomes a free agent this week: The Calgary Flames acquired Jay Bouwmeester from the Florida Panthers on Saturday, hoping to sign the smooth defenseman before he can become a free agent this week.

The Flames sent defenseman Jordan Leopold and a third-round pick in Saturday's draft to the Panthers to complete the deal.

The trade gives Calgary a window of exclusivity in negotiating a new contract with Bouwmeester and his agent, Bryon Baltimore.

Bouwmeester, 25, can become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday.

The 6-foot-4, 214-pound Bouwmeester had spent his entire career with Florida, which drafted him third in the first round in 2002.

Leopold, 28, also is eligible for free agency this week.

Selanne to play another season for Ducks: Forward Teemu Selanne, a 10-time All-Star, has decided to play another season with the Anaheim Ducks.

The 38-year-old Selanne's decision came a day after defenseman Scott Niedermayer, 35, told the team he is coming back.

"Teemu is still playing at a high level, brings passion and energy to the locker room and is a loyal member of this franchise," Ducks general manager Bob Murray said in a statement.

Selanne has scored 579 goals, ranking 18th on the league's all-time list.

Telefonica Black wins last leg of Volvo Ocean Race: Spain's Telefonica Black, skippered by Fernando Echavarri, won the 10th and final leg of the around-the-world Volvo Ocean Race.

Sweden's Ericsson 4 secured the overall victory with a third-place finish in the ninth leg, which ended June 16.

Skippered by five-time Olympic medalist Torben Grael of Brazil, Ericsson 4 covered 42,500 miles in 127 days, 7 hours, 46 minutes, 21 seconds.

Puma Ocean Racing, skippered by Ken Read, led the fleet for the majority of the 400-mile final leg from Stockholm, Sweden, to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Telefonica Black covered the final leg in 1 day, 12 hours, 41 minutes.

Swimming

Women's freestyle world records fall: Germany's Britta Steffen set a world record in the 100-meter freestyle, finishing in 52.56 seconds in Berlin.

Steffen, 25, cut 29-hundredths of a second off her previous record.

Steffen's record-setting swim came two days after she surpassed the previous record set by Australia's Lisbeth Trickett.

Meanwhile, Federica Pellegrini of Italy set a world record in the 400 freestyle at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy.

Pellegrini, the Olympic champion and world-record holder in the 200 freestyle, finished in 4 minutes, 0.41 seconds to lower the mark of Jo Jackson of Britain. Jackson had a 4:00.66 effort in March to surpass Pellegrini's previous world record.

Boxing

Mayweather-Marquez rescheduled for Sept. 19: Floyd Mayweather's return is back on, although the new date won't make things any easier for him against Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico.

Mayweather (39-0), who is coming out of a brief retirement, was slated to fight Marquez (50-4-1) next month at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Mayweather has been cleared by doctors after a rib injury and the fight will be Sept. 19 — the weekend after Mexican Independence Day.
