SAN JOSE, Calif. — Gabby Douglas has impeccable timing.

The 16-year-old from Virginia Beach, Va., beat world champion Jordyn Wieber for the first time Sunday night, winning the U.S. Olympic trials and earning the lone guaranteed spot for the London Games.

Douglas, bolstered by a dazzling uneven-bars routine that would make an acrobat sweat, beat Wieber of DeWitt, Mich., by 0.1 points after finishing a close second at last month's U.S. championship and the first night of trials.

Wieber soon joined her on what is expected be the strongest team the Americans have had since 1996.

McKayla Maroney of Long Beach, Calif., and Aly Raisman of Needham, Mass., who were with Douglas and Wieber on the U.S. team that won the title at last fall's world championships, also made the Olympic team, as did Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif.

One gymnast who won't be headed to London, at least not to compete, is Olympic champion Nastia Liukin.

Liukin, 22, announced her comeback in October, hoping to become the first reigning Olympic champion to return to the Games since Nadia Comaneci in 1980. But desire and grit are no match for shoulder problems and a three-year layoff, and Liukin's career sputtered to an end. She fell on uneven bars.

• The U.S. men's gymnastics team: automatic qualifiers Danell Leyva of Miami and John Orozco of New York; Jonathan Horton of Houston, Jake Dalton of Reno, Nev., and Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif.

• In Jamaica's track-and-field trials, sprinter Yohan Blake beat world-record holder Usain Bolt for the second time in three days. Blake won the 200 meters in 19.80 seconds; Bolt's time was 19.83.

On Friday, Blake won the 100 meters in a career-best 9.75 and Bolt's time was 9.86.
