Felix Hernandez's $175 million contract
Society’s claimed values not mirrored in actions
When I first read about Felix Hernandez’s $175 million contract [“King’s ransom,” Sports, Feb. 8], I couldn’t help but think, what if teachers got paid this kind of money? We would have kids flocking to be high-performing teachers.
We, as a society — all its sectors: families, employers, government, etc. — say we value education. I observe so many of our actions — and our economic and institutional systems — out of alignment with what we espouse as our [education] values.
