Continued debate over I-90 bridge tolls

Seattle traffic to produce increasing revenue

Did anyone really believe our main freeways would not be tolled [“Activists revive group to fight I-90 bridge tolls,” NWTuesday, Feb. 12]? Really? We are one of the highest-taxed areas. First 520, then the tunnel, then I-405. Now the local “hints of studies” about I-90.

That only leaves I-5 to complete a freeway rectangle with the highest traffic and potential high revenue producer. It will be like the Bermuda Triangle for drivers with four corners.

It is not personal; it is business, a financial decision. I wish it could be said tolling is a replacement for additional taxes, but it is not. New and additional taxes will follow.

--Tom Shafer, Bellevue

A tolling proposal

I have lived on Mercer Island for 38 years. I am fully in favor of tolling I-90 under certain conditions. In fact, in light of the recent traffic increase on I-90, due to drivers switching from 520 to avoid the toll, I believe it is necessary.

Cameras and transponder sensors must be placed on both the floating and East Channel bridges in both directions, including the Express/HOV lanes. Any vehicle that crosses both bridges within two hours will be charged the full toll appropriate to the time of day. No other vehicle will be charged.

This will allow Mercer Island residents to see a play in Seattle or shop in Bellevue without paying any toll.

The two-hour window will prevent cross-island commuters from stopping off on the Island for a Starbuck’s break or some light shopping on the way home just to avoid the toll.
