Some controls necessary

Saturate society with guns and not even America’s deadliest sniper is safe [“Slain ex-SEAL devoted to vets,” page one, Feb. 4].

He and the mother of the Sandy Hook shooter both thought of shooting for sport as healing — he for a troubled friend, she for a son with mental problems.

We may all err. Sadly, with guns, suicide most frequently works as expected. The slaughter of others is efficient, even of a master shooter.

As in war, the results from guns are often frozen in time. This game has no reset. After an argument or confrontation people are dead, not bruised or cut.

Polls show the great majority, including gun owners and families, support reasonable controls. Even the latest Supreme Court decisions support universal background checks and control of unusual or dangerous weapons.

What is it with that fringe that opposes any controls at all? The Constitution speaks of a well-regulated militia, not of a nation where 6-year-olds are unsafe in their schools.
