'Reason' and gun-control debate
Biden acknowledges faults of gun-control legislation
Danny Westneat’s Sunday column makes a big deal about the fact that one pro-gun Washington state representative is supporting a bill requiring universal background checks for gun purchases [“Reason joins the gun-rights debate,” NWSunday, Feb. 3].
I think a much better, and certainly higher-profile example of “Reason joining the gun-rights debate” is Vice President Joe Biden’s statement last week: “Nothing we’re going to do is going to fundamentally alter or eliminate the possibility of another mass shooting ...”
The current anti-gun hysteria is a result of the shooting at Sandy Hook. The supposed object of the proposed new gun laws is to make sure that something this horrible never happens again. But Biden, the point man for President Obama’s gun-control campaign, has admitted that the administration’s desired laws will not do that.
It’s rare to see a leader of the gun-control movement actually admit that they are shamelessly exploiting a horrendous situation simply to advance their own agenda.
