More about money than safety

As a teacher, I am all for enforcing speeding in school zones [“$1M a month? Speeding tickets from school zones really add up,” NWMonday, Jan. 14]. I am puzzled, however, about the cameras in the Broadview-Thompson school zone.

Maybe I am just a little skeptical of Seattle’s claim about not being in the camera business to make money. For the flashing lights to suddenly begin operating (along with the cameras) at 7:50 a.m. when the school does not begin until 9:20 a.m. seems like a stretch.

Until the cameras were installed, the lights began to flash around 8:30 a.m., far past the lucrative rush hour. Seem strange? It sure does to me. I wonder how late they operate in the afternoon.
