Proposed Interstate 90 tolls to create revenue for Highway 520

Don’t penalize Mercer Island residents for others’ sake

Why should Mercer Islanders pay for the design of Highway 520? [“I-90 tolls: Islanders incensed,” page one, Jan. 31.]

Residents and users in Bellevue, Montlake, the University District and Seattle will all benefit directly from 520 amenities such as lids, flyovers, a new Montlake Bridge, parks, artwork and other non-highway projects that Mercer Islanders will seldom if ever use. If they want and need these features, put tolls on Interstate 5 and Mountlake Boulevard and increase these and existing tolls until the project is paid for.

Interstate 90 is the only access to or from Mercer Island and it is unfair to penalize its residents for the benefit of others.

--Richard Del Missier, Mercer Island

State income tax over tolling

Instead of tolling Interstate 90 to increase revenues and penalize the low/middle class, what about a state income tax, which will increase revenue based on an individuals income?

Coming from Chicago, we are used to such a tax, which kept other taxes down.

--Michael J. D’Ambra, Bellevue

We should pay our fair share

Not all Mercer Islanders are incensed about plans to toll I-90 — some of us are ready to pay our fair share. We understand that we are not being asked to pay for “somebody else’s bridge.”

If the 520 bridge were not there, our Seattle commutes would be truly miserable — a situation we share with all on the Eastside. Now that the 520 bridge is being replaced — to make sure we don’t face that misery — we need to own up to our obligation to pay our share, along with all who drive across Lake Washington. Let’s not be free-riders.

--Jim Whitehead, Mercer Island
