The Times acknowledges wealth disparity

I was struck by the juxtaposition of the two articles on Saturday’s front page: One describing the 80-percent increase in pay to $28.9 million for Starbucks’s CEO, Howard Schultz [“Starbucks boosts Schultz’s pay 80%,” page one, Jan. 26] and the other describing the 5-percent increase in homeless people in Seattle [“Big shift in aid for homeless: funds for emergency shelters”].

Was this done on purpose? If so, I commend you for an effective way to get a message of income disparities to the public.

Schultz’s income is not of interest

Who decides what articles are meant for the front page? Does anyone think of how ridiculous some subjects are when presented side by side? The huge picture of one of our homeless right next to that tanned, grinning moneybags Howard Schultz was way more than I could handle. It completely saddened me.

Schultz should have been on page 4. Who cares how much money he has? His company does not get 1 cent from me and I love my lattes.

I give everyone a challenge: Find a neighborhood coffee stand or coffee Wi-Fi shop and try their lattes. They are much better than the “big guy,” and I love giving my hard-earned money locally.

Maybe when Schultz reads the article about himself, he will notice the man in the picture to the right of him and feel saddened too. You think?
