The time for rigorous U.S. gun-safety laws is now
Gun owners should pay for potential danger
I agree with everything in the editorial “Time to pass rigorous gun-safety laws” [Opinion, Jan. 22]. I doubt the authors of the Second Amendment could possibly imagine the kinds of guns that would one day be included under the right to bear arms.
I think we should put some heavy taxes on guns and ammunition, and very heavy taxes on permits for gun shows. Look what it has done for cigarettes — every election there is a new tax on them to pay for something.
If ammunition were pricey enough, that might slow down the sales. Let the gun owners pay for some of the havoc they are causing.

Gun ownership should require licensing
I am a gun owner who was well-trained by my dad and my uncles at an early age about gun safety. I began hunting in my early teens and am a U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam vet.
I applaud your editorial about gun-safety laws. I have never understood why we all have to pass a test and get a license to legally drive a car when the same is not true of gun ownership.
The current situation in this country is nothing short of insane. Isn’t it time for common sense to prevail over the NRA nonsense and paranoia? Please keep these editorials coming.
