State constitution includes revenue requirements

Over and over your editorial hand-wringing about public education ignores the need for increased revenue to even meet the basic requirements of the state constitution [“Fix public education, then worry about funding it,” Opinion, Jan. 13].

When many Americans accept the idea that those with the most income and benefits could reasonably be asked to “pay a little bit more,” how is it that in this wealthy state we cannot support a stable, progressive income tax? This would make planning for the future more efficient and would recognize the range of what children must have in order to fully participate.

Why can’t we get beyond feeling good about donations for backpacks and holiday gift-giving and provide for those elements known to provide quality education year-round?
