Editorial cartoon on gun control

Portrayal of NRA as violent is offensive, inaccurate

The editorial cartoon from Jan. 12 [Opinion] is both factually wrong and quite offensive. Depicting “dead animals” and a musket over the 1789 statesman juxtaposed with dead people and a “military-style” rifle over the 2013 NRA spokesman is obviously meant to portray the NRA as “advocating human slaughter”, versus the (implied) historical position of “putting food on the table.”

The intent of the Second Amendment is to explicitly prohibit the government from disarming the citizenry. This right is secured for political — not for hunting or sporting — reasons.

--William Stevens, Kirkland
