Society needs ‘reasonable legislation’

I happen to think personal safety is an issue that rises above politics — that living in a civilized society doesn’t mean being better armed than the next person, it means having the choice of not having to be, choosing not to be and not be at personal risk as a consequence. [“Congress must renew protections for women,” Opinion, Jan. 5.]

Whether that’s violence against moviegoers, schoolchildren, women or whomever, born here or not, whether or not they meet someone’s litmus test of acceptability notwithstanding, the born and breathing.

As I recall, it was a nitpicky point here as well, until a woman, her friend and her lawyer were shot and killed outside a King County Courthouse.

Reasonable limits, reasonable legislation is not too much to ask as the price for living in a “civilized society.”

What constitutes “reasonable” and its price should not be any harder to establish than that which is self-evident in our hospitals, cemeteries, courtrooms and prisons.
