Annual fee for electric-car owners in Washington
Fee is fair
So you bought your electric car to save money with no gasoline tax to help green America and for that the state and federal governments thank you. But wait, by driving an electric car you're still using state roads but the state government is losing the $0.37 tax on each gallon of gasoline you used to pay to help us repair those roads.
So to make it fair we will charge you a flat fee of $100 annually regardless of how many miles you drive [“Electric-car owners in Wash. face $100 annual fee,” NWMonday, Dec. 24]. Just one of those items the government forgot about when they encouraged you to cut back on using gasoline.
What's next, an annual $100 fee for people who quit smoking to compensate the tobacco tax they used to pay?
