Michigan Legislature's controversial law hurts unions

Freedom of choice
There seems to be some confusion about the reason for the protests going on in Michigan [“Michigan deal blow to union’s power,” page one, Dec. 12.] The new law, passed on Wednesday, gives the workers of Michigan the freedom to choose to belong to a union or decline joining a union.

How that could generate serious protests is a mystery. It’s hard to believe that the unions would want to force a worker to join their union. That, it seems, would take away a freedom of choice.
