FAA supports airlines at Paine Field

Consider impacted communities
I was chagrined to see the editorial board’s patent approval of adding commercial air Service to Paine Field [“Paine Field taxis toward takeoff,” Editorial, Dec. 7]. They noted that the opposition is from communities “not around when the airfield was built.”

These communities were built on the promise of the 1978 Mediated Role Determination dedicating this field to general aviation and aviation industries. Others, like me, purchased homes here in later years believing that Snohomish County officials would not renege on that promise. The additional noise, air and traffic pollution will only serve to degrade these communities, regardless of a flawed, pre-concluded “study” by the FAA.

The Times should do its homework and investigate what has happened to the communities around the Bellingham Airport, as an example.
And, why is The Times so anxious to promote this? On the sorry hope of several new, minimum-wage jobs at a two gate terminal?

Who will pay?
This editorial takes the position that since Paine Field has been around for long time it is OK to allow commercial flights. What nonsense.

Since the 1930s, most of the towns in the direct flight path to the airport welcomed the building explosion of private homes in the area. Ordinary hardworking people made sacrifices to buy a home in what they thought would always be peaceful, safe and beautiful communities.

Lynnwood to Everett is already one of the most congested locations on the I-5 corridor. To my way of thinking, any sound that wakes people up from a sound sleep at 4 a.m. and rattles windows during the day is a “significant impact for noise and pollution.”

There is one more sticking point other than the one mentioned of who will pay for the terminal. It is the thousands upon thousands of human beings who don't want a commercial airport in their backyard. I urge everyone to let elected officials know how you feel about this important decision that is being rammed down our throats.
