Remember Rice’s strong record
I wish that Maureen Dowd, in “Mounting questions for Susan Rice” [Opinion, Nov, 28], would have reminded readers of Susan Rice’s political history. Though the Benghazi attack and Rice’s televised responses are highly controversial, they should not overshadow a lifetime of achievement.

I agree with Sen. Susan Collins, whom Dowd quotes as saying, “If I wanted to be secretary of state, I would not go on television and perform what was essentially a political role.” Rice’s remarks did not accurately represent the situation at the Benghazi embassy and won her some definitive enemies in the Senate, particularly Sen. John McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham.

However, this isolated and highly debated incident does not outweigh Rice’s work during the Clinton administration and the conflict in Libya. The current secretary of sate herself, Hillary Clinton, believes Rice has done a great job as our ambassador to the United Nations.

Ultimately, it is President Obama’s choice on whom to nominate for secretary of state. I hope that he does not let recent and disputable events shape his decision and recalls Rice’s strong history of fighting against injustice.
