SubscribeMcDermott's pricey Bali trip not publicly funded
Taxpayers fund USAID
The Times headline on the article about Rep. Jim McDermott's Bali trip says McDermott's extremely expensive Bali trip wasn't “on the public's dime” [“McDermott’s costly Bali trip sets record, but not on public’s dime,” page one, Dec. 1].
The article reported that McDermott's spokesman said Chemonics, an international development firm, funded the trip out of a three-year contract with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Is the spokesman aware that USAID is a federal agency funded by taxpayers? How can funding by a direct line from taxpayers to USAID to Chemonics to McDermott not be “on the public's dime”?
