U.S.-Egypt diplomatic negotiations lead to cease-fire in Gaza

Withdraw U.S. support of Israel

Bravo U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Mohammed Morsi for negotiating the cease-fire [“Flurry of diplomacy cools Gaza — for now,” page one, Nov. 22]. It will prevent the further tragic loss of lives. However, the problem goes a lot deeper.

It is my plea to U.S. citizens to consider strongly withdrawing our support of Israel. This support has mistreated the Palestinians since it was granted statehood.

Because of a powerful lobby, our legislators have been pressured over the years into giving financial and military support to Israel. One reason is biblical. Another is that Israel's presence as a democracy stabilizes the region. These reasons are questionable.

— Russell Howard, Seattle
