Climate-change warrior advocates political action

Divest funds from fossil-fuel industries

Thank you for your article about Bill McKibben's latest campaign [“Climate-change warrior takes to the road,” NWThursday, Nov. 8]. I was pleased to be a member of the audience at Benaroya Hall, along with an estimated 1,500 others.

I was surprised to read in the article a quote by Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA) spokesman Tupper Hull that WSPA members are the “primary investors in research to find cleaner energy sources.” The fossil-fuel industry is investing in finding more fossil fuel, they are cutting down mountains, fracking the earth and destroying the environment before the carbon even gets burned. Their finances depend upon burning up the reserves, which is a death sentence for our planet.

This is not right and we need to fight back. At the very least, we need to stop investing in those companies. I hope the mayor is successful in his plans to divest city funds from fossil-fuel industries.

— Liz White, Seattle
