Washington state legislators plan to aid undocumented students

Democrats are trying to buy the Hispanic vote

Are we nuts? Help me to understand this nonsense. Sen. Ed Murray wants to open up state-funded college aid to undocumented students who are not American citizens [“Legislators want to aid undocumented students,” NWSaturday, Oct. 6].

We have 75,000 Washington students under state financial aid. We have 32,000 eligible Washington state students that we cannot afford to put on the program.

We want to offer in-state tuition rates to students who are not American citizens, yet we deny out-of-state American students the right to in-state tuition rates.

Let’s support our American students before we support people who broke the law to be in this country in the first place. This is just another way that the Democrats are trying to buy the Hispanic vote.

— Roger Zimbelman, Bellevue

A matter of injustice

I am outraged that Sen. Ed Murray wants to reward illegal immigrants with state financial college aid. These people have already received their high-school education — illegally — through our public-education system; they should not be allowed to take further advantage of our already limited aid for students here legally.

Just because our legislators ill-advisedly allow illegal people to qualify for in-state tuition rates doesn't mean we should compound this wrong done to taxpayers and their children. Condoning and encouraging further theft of limited college aid is wrong from any aspect and it is unfathomable how Sen. Murray can say it is a matter of justice.

I promise, if Sen. Murray continues in his efforts to take limited education funds from legal residents and give them to people who are breaking our laws, I will work with other citizens (who still constitute a majority in the state) to defeat his next re-election attempt.
